In October 2017, little Ivy Lynn Angerman, 21 months old, was diagnosed with aquagenic hives, a rare condition in which hives develop rapidly after the skin comes into contact with water, regardless of its temperature.
As the girl's condition worsens, her mother, Brittany Angerman, of Hastings, Minnesota, says she is "grateful" for the dozens of people who have supported her daughter since the family first told her story in early April. this year.
"It's something we still can't understand," Angerman told People magazine in February. "It is heartbreaking."
From Ivy's own tears to her sweat, even snow can trigger an allergic reaction that spreads to parts of her body.
The reaction can last between 15 minutes and an hour, but if you take an antihistamine, your only treatment, the reaction time is shorter. Brittany says the reactions her daughter has recently had started to feel warmer. Ivy is also starting to say how "hot" they are now.
"I used to love bath time and wanted to play in the snow," says de Ivy, who was diagnosed eight months ago. "But now she is hiding and does not want to go to the bathroom or to the street."
For now, Ivy's reactions occur after direct contact with water, but Brittany fears that she may become allergic internally someday.
"There are so many unknowns," she says. "It causes a lot of stress, but we got over it because we have to focus on Ivy."
One of the most difficult challenges for Ivy's parents is trying to stay calm so she doesn't cry and create tears.
"The more he cries, the worse the reaction," he says, "but he's too young to understand that."
Brittany adds: “We don't know what will happen, but we thank everyone for their support. It means the world. We don't feel like we're in this alone."
In support of little Ivy, a GoFund Me account has been created to help the low-income family create a home in which they can be comfortable.
