Keith Raniere, the leader of the NXIVM sect, was located and captured in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after months of a coordinated hunt on both sides of the US-Mexico border. The 57-year-old man was the mind behind the obscure cult that has been linked to Emiliano Salinas, husband of actress Ludwika Paleta, and son of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.

A video posted on the FrankReport.com site shows the moment when Mexican federal police officers arrive at the property to arrest the subject who fled in late 2017 from New York to evade the arrest warrant against him.

Raniere had taken refuge in a luxurious rented villa and after his capture was sent to Dallas, Texas, where he appeared in court on Tuesday. According to the aforementioned site, during a 4-minute federal court hearing, Raniere appeared wearing khaki shorts and a T-shirt and held by chains and declined to comment during his appearance before the magsitrado Jeffrey Cureton.

The sect made headlines when reports emerged that its leader kept some of its followers as sex slaves and that women who were part of the cult were marked in the pubic area with a hot iron.

According to multiple sources in Mexico and the United States, Emiliano Salinas was one of the wealthy followers of the cult who established his bases in New York and had satellite operations in Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. Other famous members would be billionaires Clare and Sara Bronfman, daughters of Edgar Bronfman Sr., founder of the Seagram company.

The son of the former Mexican president is the father of the twins that Ludwika Paleta had in 2017. The couple married in 2013.

In court, Raniere was informed of plans to deport him to New York, the state where he resided, but according to what was pointed out, the process could take up to two weeks. Meanwhile, the authorities denied him the right to bail by posing "risk of flight" due to his connections with wealthy people "and with multiple resources," he said.

Raniere is charged by the New York Eastern District Attorney with white trafficking, a white trafficking conspiracy and a criminal association for forced labor.
