12 people dead, including four children, is the tragic balance left by a voracious fire in a building in the Bronx locality in New York City.

Despite desperate attempts by firefighters to quell the flames that plagued the old building, built in 1916, the fire quickly spread throughout the property's five floors.

As reported by The New York Times, authorities who attended the emergency revealed that the fathoms began on the first floor of the building around 7 pm last Thursday. More than 160 firefighters arrived on the scene and at 10 pm managed to control the flames on the property, located near the renowned Bronx Zoo.

The investigators' initial findings suggest that a 3-year-old boy playing with the stove in his apartment may have started the fire.

Mayor Bill de Blasio gave statements about what happened and classified the events as the worst fire in the city in the last 25 years. "It is an unthinkable tragedy and the families are devastated … I want to offer my condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones … I ask all New Yorkers to include them in their prayers," said the leader through his account of Twitter

A further report from NBC News added that the ages of the deceased are between 1 year of age and 63. Two of the children who lost their lives in the building were only 2 and 7 years old. According to the report, four other people are in critical condition in hospitals.

The tragedy has left the iconic American city in mourning, which these days also faces extreme weather conditions due to an icy wave that passes through the northeast of the country.
