A dramatic video is circulating in the media and on social media showing the moment an inflatable boat with 34 immigrants caught fire in the Mediterranean Sea - and how rescuers saved every single person on board.
The images show the group of immigrants jumping out of the boat in fluorescent vests as the fire spreads, leaving burning debris in the water just off the Spanish coast. The Portuguese and Spanish rescue services arrived shortly after the explosion on board the ship. A Portuguese Air Force plane launched a life raft into the water, and two Spanish Coast Guard ships also picked up people who fortunately were unharmed, CBS News reported. Some were even reportedly holding on to the charred pieces of the ship to stay afloat.
The Portuguese Air Force stated in a press release that the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Other immigrants have recently faced danger in those waters - rated by some human rights defenders as the largest mass grave on the planet. A week ago, more than 2,000 people were rescued in the Mediterranean, but the bodies of at least 34 more immigrants, many of them infants, were lifted from the waters off the coast of Libya on Wednesday after some 200 people fell. to the water after the failure of his boat, according to the Italian Coast Guard.
