A tourist from Colombia accused a New York taxi driver of raping her last week in the back seat of her vehicle after a dispute over payment for a service.
According to the New York Post, the alleged victim explained to police officers that a Manhattan taxi driver had raped her last week last Wednesday when she boarded a taxi for the popular Chinatown neighborhood at about 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival at her destination he would have realized that he did not have the money with him. When he explained it to the driver, he raped her in the back seat of the vehicle.
Despite the fact that the crime happened last week, it was not until a few hours ago that the South American tourist revealed it to the police. When asked why he did not report it earlier, he explained that he was afraid.
Although no arrests have been made so far in relation to this crime, the authorities are continuing with the investigation.
Earlier last year the New York Police Department held a press conference to draw attention to the problem of taxi safety in that city. In it, it was revealed that in 2015, 14 of the 166 sexual violations committed in that city - that is, 8.4% - took place in a taxi or inside a rental vehicle. In that meeting, the authorities indicated that women are more likely to be raped in this type of transportation than on the dark platforms of the city's metro system.
