At least 11 family members were crushed to death after the church where the baptism of a two-month-old baby was taking place, due to the earthquake that affected several areas of Mexico City. The event occurred when the roof of the Santiago Apóstol church of Atzala, Puebla, -one of the areas that has been said is among the most affected by the earthquake-, collapsed and fell on the people inside the temple. At that precise moment, a mass was held on the occasion of the baptism of the minor, just two months old, indicates the Univision News report.

In the video of the news portal, a woman, identified as a relative of the victims, explained that the tragedy occurred when the roof of the building collapsed in the middle of the sacrament. Friends, neighbors and relatives of the 11 deceased met on Wednesday to bid him a final farewell. It should be noted that the coffins were placed in the same place so that the persons could pay their respects and give condolences to the loved ones of these victims of the 7.1 earthquake that struck Mexico on September 19.

Univision Noticias reports that the names of the fatal victims of the event are: Florencio, Fidela, Aurelia, Manuela, María de Jesús, Carmen, Samuel, Azucena, Feliciana, Susana and Elideth. [This was] "a thing of fright, sadness, because really most of the people who were inside, well, died," Lorenzo Sánchez, the church's sacristan, told the AP news agency.

The girl's father and priest survived the catastrophe. “One of the things that we have been taught is to stick to the walls that are fixed. Really our temple is already an old temple and due to its structure it was already a little deteriorated”, Sánchez explained.

Once the quake ended, residents of the area began removing debris and searching for victims. “We rescued some alive. But, most died. With the help of some of the communities around here, all the bodies were removed,”a man who helped the work told UnivisionNoticias.
