The dramatic rescue of a 12-year-old girl allegedly trapped in the rubble of a school collapsed by the Mexico earthquake has taken a new turn. Apparently there was never and is not a girl trapped and the person who would be under the ruins of the Enrique Rébsamen School would be an adult woman, possibly from the staff, as authorities in Mexico have just revealed.

"We want to inform you that based on the equipment we have, there are indications in all the rescue media that there is possibly a person still alive," reported the Under Secretary of the Navy, Ángel Enrique Sarmiento Beltrán, in statements collected by the newspaper El Universal..

"There are traces of blood and photographs of as if he had crawled and is possibly a person still alive," said the official. The Secretary of Public Education, the Tlalpan delegation -to which the neighborhood where the educational campus was located- and the Ministry of Defense have made a count of the students that indicates that all the students of the campus have been transferred to hospitals or " unfortunately they died”, continued Sarmiento Beltrán.

"We never had knowledge of this version," said the official about the girl who allegedly responded to the name of Frida Sofía. "We do not believe, we are sure it was not a reality."

The alleged contact with the minor occurred on Wednesday around 9:00 am local time and generated intense media coverage of her rescue.

Previously, the Ministry of Public Education had reported that no relatives of the alleged girl had appeared and that school records did not show a student under that name.

According to an Associated Press report, Sarmiento said that 11 live children have been rescued from the aforementioned school so far, while 19 have died.

Six adults are also among the victims. In total, and according to CNN reports, 50 people have been rescued alive among the ruins left by the earthquake.
