Doctors from a Wisconsin clinic were taken aback when a man who went to the emergency room showed up with a nail buried in his chest, a short distance from his heart.
The unusual event occurred on June 25 when Doug Bergeson, 52, was working at the fireplace in his home in the city of Peshtigo. Trying to put a nail in with a nail gun, it bounced off the wood and landed on his chest.
The man told the AP agency that he brushed the splinters off his shirt and then noticed the protruding head of the nearly four-inch nail protruding almost an inch from his chest.
"I thought he had brushed against me," Bergeson said. "I felt good. He was not concerned about the injury. He couldn't feel pressure or blood pooling. I could see how the nail moved with the beat of my heart."
Quietly, the man drove to the Marinette Bay Area Medical Center - located about 10 minutes from his home - and still had time to call his wife to ask for a clean shirt.
