A Border Patrol agent in Anzalduas Park, Texas, discovered Sunday the bodies of a woman and three children who died very close to the Rio Grande, on the border with Mexico.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra confirmed the news through his official Twitter account, reporting that the bodies were of two children between the ages of 3 months and one, a boy between the ages of 1 and 3, and a young woman of about 20.

According to Guerra, the 4 deceased would have died days before being found in a place known as El Rincón del Diablo, which borders the Rio Grande and is located within the protected area of Las Palomas. This site is used by coyotes to pass people from Mexico due to its proximity to the United States, according to The Monitor, in Texas.

In the region where the bodies were found, an alert was issued this weekend for a heat wave in the area with temperatures exceeding 115 degrees Fahrenheit in Rio Grande City:

This area is known for its hostile territory and poor visibility. “There is a lot of brush. It is like in the ranches: there is no difference,” Larry Gallardo, sheriff of the town, told the newspaper to explain the difficulty of finding bodies in the area.

The weather report for this Sunday marked a maximum temperature close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the police, the group was reportedly killed by heat stroke and dehydration.

"It is a discouraging situation," commented FBI sources, who are already investigating the case, on Monday. The victims' place of origin has also not been disclosed.

The Rio Grande Valley sector has experienced a marked increase in the number of arrests made by the Border Patrol in the area. In the 7-month period that ended last April, the agency arrested more than 164,000 people who attempted to cross the country through that area. The number exceeds the total arrest for the 2018 fiscal year.
