Although his older sister Princess Diana passed away twenty years ago, Earl Charles Spencer remains one of the most avid advocates of his legacy. So much so, that his residence is in Althorp, where he lived with her in childhood, and the place where her grave is located. However, in a moving interview for a television special conducted by People and ABC, he reveals that he has had to fight one or another charge of conscience.

"He was furious, he wasn't just angry," he said, saying how he felt in the days after Lady Di's death. “[I thought] I could have done [something]. Because you always think, 'God, I wish I could have protected her.' It was devastating."

In this way, Spencer puts into context one of the most common stages of grief among the bereaved: feelings of guilt and lamentation. According to the United States Public Library of Science (PLOS), when a loved one dies, "people often wish they could have done things differently."

Even though his sister's death remains a wound in his life that will never close, Count Spencer says he is comforted to see how his nephews, Princes William and Harry, are preserving his legacy: “I love to see the simple way with the one that treats people and how they make others feel comfortable… It is very easy to make the connection between them and their mother”.

Princess Diana of Wales died in a tragic car accident in Paris in 1997, along with her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, when they were besieged by journalists in a high-speed chase through the streets of Paris.
