A New Jersey teenager was accused of killing his mother in front of his younger brother. The incident occurred on August 7, when Edgar Díaz was 17 years old, however on Tuesday the Ocean County prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that the young Hispanic man, now 18 years old, will be prosecuted as an adult. He is accused of killing his mother Margarita Díaz in the parking lot of the Toms River office complex.
Authorities accuse him of attacking and stabbing his mother before hitting her head on the pavement, according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE. He allegedly killed her in front of her younger brother. Police found the 44-year-old woman after answering a call about an attack at 9 pm The mother was taken to a local hospital, where she died of her serious injuries.
A few days after the mother's death, Edgar Díaz, then 17 years old, was arrested. The youth remains behind bars at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center. "He will be prosecuted as an adult," Billhimer said in a statement. Edgar Díaz also faces charges for illegal possession of a firearm and for endangering the welfare of a minor.
