When the last visitors of the day left the theater-museum dedicated to Salvador Dalí on Thursday in his hometown of Figueres, in northeast Spain, forensic technicians sent by a Madrid court began the macabre task of opening the grave of the great Catalan artist and extract samples from his embalmed corpse.

A scene worthy of appearing in one of the works of the master of surrealism.

The reason for this exhumation is the court's decision to verify the claim of a 61-year-old woman, Pilar Abel, that she is Dalí's daughter. According to him, he came to the world in Figueres in 1956 as a result of an extramarital relationship between the genius and his mother when she was serving in a house of a neighboring family in the nearby town of Cadaqués, the painter's place of residence.

"I want the truth," Abel said at a press conference in Madrid on Wednesday, according to the Europa Press agency. The woman, who is a fortune-teller by profession, started the judicial process 10 years ago to get the paternity test practiced, which, if positive, would entitle her to a quarter of the artist's assets, according to the plaintiff's lawyer.

As in other cases of this nature, the answer to the mystery is in the DNA samples that have been removed by the technicians from the painter's remains, who since his death without descendants in 1989 have been resting behind a one-ton headstone and media located under the dome of the museum. Once the corpse was discovered, without having to remove it from its resting place, several samples were withdrawn to discover its genetic code.

According to the Spanish press, these samples will be transferred to a specialized laboratory in which the DNA extracted from them will be compared with the content of a saliva sample that Abel has already provided to the authorities. The results of the tests will serve so that in a hearing scheduled for September 18, the justice system will determine if Dalí had an unrecognized daughter.
