What started out as a simple page to connect friends and students at Harvard University, has now become the cyber space that connects the world. In a few weeks, Facebook will reach one of its great milestones: more than 2 billion users. "[It is] a great thing and this has been a period to reflect on our role and responsibility towards the world and the next thing we want to get involved in," said Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder, head of the board and chief operating officer of Facebook at PEOPLE IN SPANISH in his legendary aquarium, his conference room in the MK20 building of the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The responsibility is great and as you mentioned in your recent speech to the 2017 class of Harvard, finding a purpose in life is not enough. "The challenge for our generation," said Zuckerberg, "is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose."

It is no longer enough for Facebook that people connect only with their friends and family. "It is also important to help people establish a sense of community and expose them to new perspectives and ideas with which they are not yet familiar," he added in his calm voice.

To that end and for the first time, Zuckerberg noted, Facebook is going to give groups autonomy and control on that platform. The administrators of those groups have already started celebrating. Some 300 administrators from different countries gathered on Thursday, June 22 at The Revel Fulton Market in Chicago, where Zuckerberg announced the possibilities that they will now have within that platform.

Alex Deve, Group Product Manager, clarified why creating and maintaining a caring community on Facebook is so important. “It is about the community; If you want to develop communities, you really have to support community leaders. That is what this is about, how we help leaders in those communities to moderate and expand them.”

Hispanics have made Facebook part of their community: a total of 26.7 million Latinos in the United States are connected through this medium. That means that more than half of the Hispanic population in this country has a Facebook account.

Among the Latino groups that also gathered in Chicago were: Hispanic Military Wives USA Armed Forces; United X Women, No to Violence; Beauty Obsessed and Latinas Think Big.

When some countries talk about divisions, separations and building walls, Facebook launches itself with a new mission: "to give people the power to establish communities and to unite the world more."
