Paris authorities are holding in his custody in a hospital a man who suddenly hammered out a police officer guarding the iconic Notre Dame de Paris cathedral.
CNN reported that the police were able to repel the assault by shooting the individual, who fell wounded. “They sounded like two shots and then I could smell the gunpowder. I didn't see why I was on the other side of the cathedral,”a woman who asked to be identified as Abigail M told the network.
The police immediately cordoned off the area and asked passersby to move away from the scene. By searching the attacker, it was determined that the rest of the hammer also carried a kitchen knife, which made one think of the attack last weekend in London.
At a press conference, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said the attacker had yelled "this is for Syria" before he was shot. Although for the moment the authorities have not been able to determine if the individual, who acted alone, was affiliated with an extremist group.
France has been rocked in recent months by several terrorist attacks. In April, a man arrived in the Champs-Elysées avenue in his car and unloaded his automatic weapon against two policemen who were on foot in that area, killing one and injuring another.
He then fled, during which he managed to injure yet another officer before other officers could shoot him down with their weapons.
