A police officer from the University of Berkeley, California, is being investigated after the appearance of a video, which has gone viral, in which he is seen fining a Hispanic street vendor and taking money from him during a football game in the last Saturday.
The recording was recorded with his cell phone by Martín Flores, a former student of the university and a resident of the area. Outraged by what he was witnessing, Flores protested the agent's performance and questioned his motives. "How sad to see a UC Berkeley police officer give a vendor a ticket and confiscate the money he has earned," Flores is heard saying in the video. é¶û ÷ G · yÝxÕ§z × † žÛ × 9åæôóÇtãwwó ‡
"That is not right … Are you going to take the money that was earned with the sweat on your forehead?" Asks Flores. "People can drink on campus and they don't get a fine, but a man who is selling hot dogs, making a living, is he fined and taken away from his money?"
The agent responds that the man "does not have permission" and that what he is seeing is "the implementation of law and order."
The seller, whose name is Juan, was the only one to be fined out of the three detainees by the police, according to the local channel KTLA 5. In the same video shared on Flores' Facebook wall, a person is heard applauding the police.. "That's right, well done. You did a good job!" Says that person.
The video has been received by many network users as a sign of abuse of power, while others support the agent's performance.
What is certain is that the controversial recording has added more than 11 million views on Facebook and has been shared 166,000 times.
Flores started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Juan's legal expenses and to compensate the money that was seized from him. Until Monday they had collected a total of days, explains the page.
