Venezuelan authorities are investigating the murder of Flor Marina Castro de Vidal, mother of the late Olympic medalist Rafael Vidal, after her daughter found her Monday with a fatal head injury.
According to the Venezuelan press, the daughter had gone to her mother's home worried that she could not reach her on the phone. Upon arrival he found her already lifeless and discovered that various belongings had disappeared from the house, so there is a theory that her murder may have been theft as a motive.
Rafael Vidal was the first to give Venezuela an Olympic medal in swimming, a feat that becomes more relevant when you consider that he was the shortest competitor in that race at 5 feet 11 inches tall.
When he won bronze in the 200-meter butterfly at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, the athlete who narrowly snatched the silver from him, German Michael Gross, was 6 feet 11 inches.
