Kurt Cochran and his wife Melissa were on vacation in England celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary when their time in the British Parliament turned into a tragedy. The Utah couple are among the victims of the massacre that occurred there when an attacker ran over several people in his SUV and finally crashed the vehicle into the fence surrounding the parliament, located in the Palace of Westminster. The man - who was shot by the police and died on the scene - also stabbed a policeman, killing four people and leaving 40 wounded. British police have called the event a terrorist act.
"Our family is heartbroken," Clint Payne, Melissa's brother, told People magazine. Kurt Cochran died in the massacre while Melissa was seriously injured and is still hospitalized. The couple planned to return home today, the day after the tragedy.
"Kurt was a good man and a loving husband," Payne acknowledged. "We express our gratitude to the emergency and medical team who cared for them and ask for their prayers for Melissa and our family."
The couple was on a dream vacation that also included stops in Austria and Germany. Melissa has "a broken leg, a broken rib and a cut on the head", but she will survive, according to her brother shared on social networks. "Our hearts are sore for her and her children who lost a partner and a loving father," she added.
