The owner of a pizzeria on Long Island died while on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Vittorio Caruso, 56, died last week at the Boca Chica Resort in Santo Domingo. The man, who lived in Glen Cove, New York, is one of multiple American tourists whose deaths have recently been reported in the Dominican Republic.

Caruso's family told News 12 Long Island that the man died on June 17. According to their sister-in-law Lisa Maria Caruso, they had received a call informing them that Vittorio was ill and minutes later, they received another call about his death.

The US State Department confirmed Caruso's death to Fox News. Lisa Maria told Fox News that Caruso "had experienced respiratory distress after drinking something."

Her older brother Frank Caruso told the New York Post that Vittorio was “very healthy when he went on vacation. "He went to the doctor before he left and he had no problems," said Frank. "I spoke to the doctor. He called me when he found out that he had died and said that he had not detected anything wrong before leaving.”

The family expects to receive their autopsy results on Monday, according to News 12. According to the FBI, several federal agents are in the Dominican Republic investigating six deaths of American tourists, four at various properties in Bahía Príncipe and two deaths at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino..
