Arrested Grandmother Who Tortured 7-year-old Granddaughter

This week the grandmother accused of torturing her 7-year-old granddaughter, who had caused deformations to her skull due to the beating she was given with a tube, appeared in a court in the State of Mexico. The woman faces charges for the injuries and for depriving the girl of her liberty.

According to the newspaper La Opinión and CNN en Español, police elements found the minor in Colonia Puebla in the Federal District in December. Her condition was alarming: in addition to injuries with a sharp weapon, she had severe bruises caused by the blows of a tube on various parts of the body and scars on her wrists since she had been chained.

The minor was also anemic, had scabies on the skin and deformations in the knees, among other injuries, for which she was referred to the National Institute of Pediatrics. There she underwent reconstructive surgeries on her face and on the deformed parts of her skull.

The investigations, which took months, led to the victim's grandmother, who is reported to be 54 years old and working in a market on wheels. Three children, 5, 8 and 9 years old, cousins of the victim, were also found at her home. The little ones will serve as witnesses in this case, but in the meantime they will be in a transitional home.

The grandmother, whose name has not been released by the authorities, will remain in detention until her trial begins. If found guilty, she faces between 40 to 60 years in prison.
