The appalling stone and beat death of a transsexual in Brazil has shocked Brazilian society, which has no answer to the victim's mother's complaint that her son suffered a lynching on the street and in broad daylight.

The brutal attack that took place in the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, on February 15, was perpetrated by several individuals armed with sticks, stones, and shovels, with which they threatened, beat, and finally killed Dandara dos Santos., 42, who implored them for his life.

A video recorded by the cell phone of one of the aggressors captured the horrifying attack, which culminates with the assassins loading their victim in a wheelbarrow to liquidate him.

"I was very desperate, crying and asking God what had happened," the mother of the deceased, Francisca Ferreira, said heartbrokenly to the Brazilian daily Globo.

"I went crazy, I didn't know if it had [been] a fight or not," explained the mother, who highlighted the kind and caring nature of her son. "She always helped. She never said no."

Authorities have arrested at least three teens and two adults for the crime committed in a popular neighborhood in Fortaleza, and that some are linked to drug trafficking and other crimes, the agent in charge of the investigation, Bruno Ronchi, told The New York Times.

The governor of the state of Ceará, Camilo Santana, expressed his rejection of the crime. "Each and every attempt on life has my deepest rejection," he said in a message on Facebook about the crime, which has highlighted the discrimination and attacks suffered by the transgender community.
