There are many people who risk their lives to leave Libya and be able to reach a coast of a European country through the Mediterranean Sea in search of refuge or a better life. But the dreams of thousands of immigrants fleeing Africa do not always have a happy ending.

According to a New York Times report, 74 lifeless bodies of immigrants were found on a beach in Zawiya, a small coastal town in the African country. Despite the tragedy and the sad death toll, authorities fear the number will increase, as the boats used to cross can carry up to 120 passengers.

Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration in Rome, reportedly revealed to the newspaper that the boat in which the deceased were traveling apparently left for Italy last Saturday but would have been adrift for days, before being shipwrecked, after that his engine was apparently stolen by smuggling gangs.

It is ensured that this tragedy marks only the beginning of the migratory season in the African country, which due to its proximity to Italy is used as an exit door from the continent. An estimated 180,000 immigrants arrived in the European country from the Libyan coast.

Although many manage to arrive and find refuge, the numbers of those who do not succeed are more than terrifying. 4,479 people reportedly died in 2016 trying to reach Italy from Libya through the Mediterranean.

Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan along with Libya are part of the countries that have been vetoed by the controversial executive order given by President Donald Trump, which denies entry to anyone from these 7 nations who seek refuge in the U. S.
