Esteban Santiago, the former military man with apparent mental problems who appears in a video he caught opening fire at the Fort Lauderdale airport, could have had New York among one of his targets.
According to ABC News, the Iraq war veteran had a reservation to fly to the Big Apple on December 31, but canceled his trip a few days earlier and headed to Florida instead. The one-way ticket cost him the gunman who opened fire last Friday in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 of Ft. Lauderdale Airport, causing panic among the thousands of passengers and forcing him to suspend air traffic.
Five people were killed and eight others were injured before security forces were able to reduce the attacker, who was uninjured.
Santiago, whose family he claims suffers from mental illness, faces charges of murder with a firearm and acts of violence.
