Barack Obama gave his last speech as President of the United States before handing over to Donald Trump the keys to the White House.
The still president chose the city of Chicago to address the nation, the city where his political career began, and for 50 minutes he reviewed both his achievements and the facets to improve and for which he promised to continue fighting from his new position, once leave the presidency.
Here are some key moments from his farewell speech:
1. A message of optimism and hope.
"I ask you to believe. Not in my ability to change, but yours. May you retain the idea of our founding fathers, the idea whispered by slaves and abolitionists, the spirit of immigrants and those who fought for justice, the belief at the heart of every American whose history has not yet been written: Yes, it is may".
2. The future is in good hands.
This coming generation, who believe in a just, inclusive America, you know that the constant change that is our hallmark is not something to fear but to embrace, and that you are willing to take this democracy forward. You will soon be in the majority and that is why I think the future is in good hands.”
3. Thanks to Joe Biden.
"It was the first decision I made as a candidate and the most successful one."
4. Between tears Obama dedicated a special moment to talk about his wife, Michelle
“For the past 25 years you have not only been my wife and the mother of my daughters but also my best friend. You have made the White House belong to everyone and a new generation looks at a broader horizon because it has you as a role model. You make me and this country proud too”.
5. A warning about racism in the United States.
"If every economic problem is portrayed as a contest between middle-class white workers and disadvantaged minorities, then workers of all colors will fight for crumbs while the wealthiest continue to isolate themselves on their private land."
6. Once again he had to say no to "four more years!", Something that has been asking him many people in his last appearances.
"I'm afraid I can not".
