Debbie Reynolds died at age 84 a day after her daughter, also actress Carrie Fisher. Fisher died at the age of 60 from a heart attack, while Reynolds had a possible stroke, as confirmed by People magazine.
Reynolds is known for roles in movie classics like Singing in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. The American actress was the target of controversy over comments she made in the 1990s about Hispanic women that many considered humiliating and offensive.
“I think there is a lot of work in the field of domestic work that allows you to earn a good salary. There are a lot of rich people's homes that, you know, do hire employees,”she then told a Hispanic channel during a conference on women in Fresno, CA, when asked what her advice was for the Hispanic woman.
Reynolds also said during this interview decades ago that she believed that it was difficult for Mexican families to succeed and get ahead when they had to raise 14 or 16 children. Her assistant at the time, Margie Duncan, came to her defense, assuring that it was not the intention of the actress to hurt or offend anyone.
"She is not an artist who makes others feel less," Duncan said. "She supports the underdog and wants people to outdo themselves."
Reynolds was also at the center of a famous Hollywood love triangle. The actress and her ex-husband, singer Eddie Fisher, were close friends with actress Elizabeth Taylor, and many of her fans supported her when Fisher separated from Reynolds and soon after married Taylor. According to People account, the actresses were reconciled before the death of Liz Taylor in 2011. The two met by chance on a cruise ship and talked about the past.
