Surnames such as García, López and González are as popular in the United States as Smith, Johnson and Williams. This was demonstrated by a report of the 15 most common surnames published this Thursday by the United States Census Bureau.
The list shows demographic results that had not been published since 1990 and that demonstrate the rapid growth of the population of Latino origin in the country.
Three of the 10 most popular last names are Latin; the most common is Garcia, who ranks number six on the list.
Complete list of the most popular surnames of 2016:
The studies follow from the registration of 6.3 million names that have been reported since 2010.
And although they do not yet appear on the list, the last names Vázquez, Velázquez and Bautista occupy part of the list of the 15 last names whose frequency grows most rapidly.
The study results also yielded evidence of the rapid rise of the Asian population. The most common of them is Zhang, followed by Li, Ali, Liu, and Khan.
