United States President-elect Donald Trump was chosen by TIME magazine as the 2016 Person of the Year.

President of the divided States of America is what they call him on the cover of the magazine that comes out this week. Although the New York-born billionaire was not very happy with the title, according to The New York Times, he has already described the mention as "tremendous honor."

The official announcement of the prestigious appointment was made this morning on the Today (NBC) program and was preceded by a Twitter notice from Trump himself.

"This is a very important magazine," Trump said in a telephone interview with Today's co-host, Matt Lauer. "I have been fortunate enough to appear on their covers many times this year and last year."

However, true to his character, the president-elect made a comment regarding the title they placed on him: "When they say divided States of America, I was not the one who divided them," he said. "They are divided now. Come on, there are many divisions, but we are going to unite them again and we are going to have a country that is very healthy.”

After an aggressive campaign, Trump prevailed against the predictions of the polls to the democrat Hillary Clinton in the elections of the last month. Just after the new president is the former secretary of state on the list of Time personalities, along with gymnast Simone Biles, singer Beyoncé, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, as well as people who denounced the poisoning of drinking water in Flint, Michigan.

Clinton, who won the popular vote in the elections but lost in the Electoral College, was chosen as "Person number 2" by the magazine.

His praise for Time contrasts with this 2015 complaint when he was not chosen among the most influential.

As for the 2015 team, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the magnate at the time did not agree. "They chose the person who is ruining Germany," said the businessman, who said it was a "bad list."

In his explanation of why Trump is on the cover this year, Time said he continues the tradition of selecting the president-elect.

Barack Obama and George W. Bush were chosen twice as Person of the Year, for example.

The Person of the Year has been chosen annually since 1920 and has been the subject of controversy in the past, as some of the elections have been quite striking, such as that of Adolf Hitler in 1938 or that of the Russian dictator Joseph Stalin in 1939 and 1942.
