Sherri Papini, the California mother who was kidnapped and tortured for nearly three weeks, was so physically abused when she regained her freedom that she thought no one was going to dare help her.

Her husband Keith Papini told ABC News that once her captors released her, her wife began to ask for help from drivers who passed by on the street, but no one stopped. "Well then, maybe people don't stop because I'm chained up and I look like I just escaped from prison," she said she thought.

Since they released her with a chain around her waist, she tried to hide it with her clothes so as not to scare those who asked for help.

"She was screaming so loudly that she was spitting blood from screaming so someone would stop," Papini said, noting that the kidnappers, when they released her, pushed her from a vehicle with the chain and a bag over her head.

Nothing had prepared him to see the traces of the abuse his wife suffered, he said in a statement obtained by People. He had bruises all over his face and body, his beautiful blonde hair had been shaved, his nose had been broken, and he had lost so much weight that he weighed only 87 pounds.

For now, the authorities have not specified the reason behind the kidnapping of the young woman on November 2 while she was running. The victim was able to identify her captors as two Hispanic women, one older than the other, who spoke in Spanish while being held.

"Sherri has tried to give us the best description she could, but she couldn't give us a detailed description because her assailants were covering their faces," Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said at a recent news conference.
