Given the concern of having his daughter Antonia in the United States with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Sergio Mayer transferred her to Mexico. Given the impediment to cross to the neighboring country, via Tijuana, and that his eldest daughter could not travel alone because she was 13 years old, the actor requested support from various official bodies. However, that action brought him a series of criticisms when considering that he used his position as a federal deputy.
“Things start to get complicated; This is how I communicate with the [Mexican] Foreign Ministry, who put me in touch with the Consul General of San Diego, "Mayer explained to People en Español. “Whatever you say, whatever you do, there will always be criticism. What is not worth it is to discredit the work that the chancellery and the consulate did. I did the paperwork like any Mexican and I had the answer as it should be.”
Regarding the controversy caused because, upon arrival, the girl had no protection against COVID-19, the producer also explained what the situation was.
"When she left San Diego and crossed migration, the people who came with her did not bring her, nor did they give her protection," she explained. "When I received her here [in Mexico], obviously, I put her face mask on and disinfected her."
In the face of the crisis caused by the coronavirus in Mexico, many public figures spoke out about the lack of actions by their president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Thus, Sergio Mayer made a direct call, "as a father", "citizen" and "federal deputy", to the president to face the pandemic.
"I have an obligation, always, to take care of the citizens who voted for us and who we are representing, and that is why I made that decision to show the President that he was putting his health at risk and that this was not good for Mexicans", he explained. "Mexico was not going to be exempt from having the contagion and we had to take care of ourselves and start putting together a contingent plan."
