Every time young Keith Moore - an American teacher who weighs about 200 pounds and is over six feet tall - gets up to sing with a group of mariachis, more than one will think the boy is a little lost.
But everything changes when the today called “gringo mariachi” opens his mouth and starts singing. His videos interpreting traditional themes of Mexican music have gone viral after several personalities from the sports network ESPN discovered his talent through their social networks and shared it. In fact, more than 25,000 users have joined their Instagram account - elgueroranchero - in one week, according to the New York Post.
"If it's the first time people hear me sing, they usually turn and look at their friends because they don't expect it," the young man told the newspaper. "If it's someone [Latinx] or familiar with that culture, they usually seem confused at first."
Moore, who is an elementary school teacher in the San Francisco, CA metropolitan area, grew up listening to the music of the Beach Boys, but when he began to develop his love of singing, it was Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Mexican singer Vicente Fernández who they stole his heart.
"There is an authentic emotion in the songs," said the young man. "Of course there are two different genres, but I feel that if you can sing one, you can also sing the other."
That is precisely what it does. The young man, who learned Spanish during a two-year volunteering in Costa Rica, began singing in karaoke bars and with mariachis who played on the streets of the Latin American countries he visited. But more or less a year ago, Moore did not upload any videos to his social media, so he is more than surprised that his past "presentations" have gone viral.
The support he has received on platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok has been so great that it has encouraged him to create an account on the SoundCloud digital site to upload his music.
But just as there are many who applaud his talent, there are others who disapprove of Mexican music singing. "I've seen a number of people say things like, 'This guy is stealing our music,' but I'm really sorry that they feel that way," said Moore. "I just love music and love singing it."
