A new documentary promises to reveal new details about the troubled life of the late Puerto Rican soccer player Aaron Hernández. The NFL star, who became famous playing for the New England Patriots, hanged himself in 2017 with a sheet in prison, where he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd. Hernández was 27 years old and was found guilty of planning the murder of soccer player Odin Lloyd, the boyfriend of Hernández's fiancée's sister, Shayanna Jenkins, with whom the soccer player had a daughter.

The documentary, titled Aaron Hernandez, the Killer Inside, premieres on Netflix on January 15. In the trailer they show an alleged phone call from Aaron accusing his mother Terri Hernández of his problems. While awaiting his trial for Lloyd's 2013 murder, Hernández made several calls from prison to his mother in which he allegedly blamed her for many of his own mistakes, but in turn expressed his interest in reconciling with her. In an interview last year, Aaron's older brother revealed to PEOPLE that Aaron had suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. "A lot of things happened to him, both good and bad," Jonathan Hernández told PEOPLE. “People think they know my brother, but it really isn't. They know what they saw on the news, but they don't know the battles he faced.”

As an adult, Aaron confessed that he had been sexually abused as a minor, without revealing further details. Jonathan also alleged that their father, who died in 2006, was physically abusive. "Our father beat us for anything," he told PEOPLE. When Jonathan threatened to report him to the police, he said his father promised to give him the worst beating of his life.

Aaron's attorneys have also stated that the deceased athlete suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease - which is supposed to cause aggression, depression and explosive behavior - that has also been diagnosed in others NFL players. "Aaron lived a chaotic and horrendous existence in many ways because of this undiagnosed brain injury," his attorney said in a lawsuit against the NFL. For its part, the National Football League has denied these allegations. All of these controversies will be addressed in the documentary, which also explores how the lives of other people related to the athlete were affected.
