Netflix premieres this expected documentary When I Met Chapo this Friday, in which actress Kate del Castillo tells her version of the famous meeting she had with Joaquín Guzmán el Chapo Loera in the mountains of Sinaloa in 2015.

The launch of the film has been surrounded by controversy after the actor Sean Penn charged against the Mexican and Netflix.

The actor, who was also at that already famous clandestine meeting, sent a press release on Thursday requesting changes to the script, particularly in the apparent assertion in the documentary that Penn had alerted the Justice department of his encounter with El Chapo before traveling to Mexico.

That meeting was later disclosed by the actor in an article published in Rolling Stone magazine a few days after the drug trafficker was captured in January 2016 by Mexican authorities.

"It is reprehensible that in their continued effort to gain attention and publicity, Ms. Del Castillo and her team - who also have no first-hand experience in this - seek to create a false, silly, and daring narrative," actor Mark Fabiani at TMZ.com.

"The idea that Penn or someone from him alerted the United States Department of Justice about the trip is a fabrication and a blatant lie," the spokesperson continued. "That never happened, nor would there have to be a reason for that to have happened."

According to various media, Penn's fear is that the idea that he facilitated the capture of the boss, who is being held awaiting trial in New York, could put a price on his head and that of his family.

Earlier this month, Penn told Variety magazine through a spokeswoman that she had contacted Netflix to change the story. “Mr. Penn has already seen [the documentary] and hopes that at least he has the opportunity to participate. It lacks accuracy and there are things assumed in Kate's story,”he said then.

The California-based company denied the actor's version Thursday in another statement.

"Sean Penn had every opportunity on multiple occasions to participate in When I Met El Chapo and he didn't," he said. "The events surrounding the now infamous encounter have been well documented, including by Penn himself in [the magazine] Rolling Stone and his multiple comments since then."

"The only new thing we're exploring with this series," Netflix said, "is giving Kate a chance to tell her side in this story that's stranger than fiction."

When I met El Chapo, it premiered on the well-known streaming service this Friday.
