2020 has not started very well for the British royal family. This Tuesday the Dukes of Sussex, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stunned everyone by announcing their resignation as "senior" members of the British royal family. The couple made the announcement via networks warning that in the future they will live between North America and the United Kingdom.
The news has spread like wildfire and has provoked an immediate reaction from Queen Elizabeth II who has said 'just a moment', assuring that negotiations with the actress and her grandson are just beginning.
"The discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in their initial stages," reads the statement issued Tuesday by Buckingham Palace. "We understand your desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated situations that will take time to define."
The statement is a slowdown in the couple's plans that gave the surprising news after a six-week voluntary retreat in Canada.
"After many months of internal reflection and discussion, we have chosen to make a transition this year to begin forging a new progressive role within this institution," they explained in their Instagram post. "We intend to step back as primary members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen [ Elizabeth II]."
The queen's message comes amid reports from sources in London that no member of the royal household was aware of the couple's plans and that both the queen and her son, Prince Charles - Harry's father - and his only brother, Prince William, heard about the announcement on television.
"The queen is deeply disappointed," a senior source told the Daily Mail. Said person assures that other relatives are equally "in shock, sad and simply furious" by the announcement.
The news also deepens the conflict that has been awakened for months between Harry and his William. "Nothing has changed," a source tells People about the sibling quarrel. "They don't talk to each other, they don't touch each other, no one sends [text] messages."
