The Golden Globes are just around the corner; That is why at People en Español we have prepared a count of the Latinos who have been awarded as the best in different areas in the last 10 years.
The Mexican Alfonso Cuarón was awarded in the edition of last January on two occasions: one as best director and one in the best film category, both for Rome. Considered a black and white masterpiece by his admirers, it is inspired by memories of his childhood and the domestic servant who took care of him and his siblings.
In 2014 Cuarón became the first Latino to win a Golden Globe in the competitive Best Director category for Gravity, written and produced by himself alongside David Heyman. This space film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney received rave reviews for, among other things, its ability to keep the viewer on the edge of the seat.
Four years later it was the turn of the also Mexican Guillermo del Toro, who shone as the best director thanks to his feature film Shape of Water, which also won the award for best soundtrack. This production was one of the most nominated of that night edition.
Although in 2017 no Latino stood out, a year earlier Latinos had shined in both film and television. The Mexican Gael García Bernal won in the category of best actor in a television, musical or comedy series for his work in Mozart in the Jungle, while the Guatemalan Oscar Isaac did so in the category of best actor in a television movie or limited series. for his role in Show Me A Hero.
That same year, the Mexican Alejandro González Iñárritu triumphed twice: as best director and best film for The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, who also won as best dramatic actor.
González Iñárritu had obtained in 2015 the best screenwriter award for the movie Birdman, written together with the Cuban-American Alexander Dinelaris and the Argentines Armando Bo and Nicolás Giacobone. Boriqua artist Gina Rodríguez was the best actress in a television series for Jane The Virgin. Rodríguez has been nominated four times in total for the same role in different years.
In 2011, the miniseries Carlos starring the Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramírez was considered the best in its format. The production is based on the life of the Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, who in the 1960s became one of the most wanted men in the world and who is currently serving a life sentence in France.
The 77th edition of the Golden Globes will take place on January 5 in Beverly Hills, CA. Who will be the Latinos that will stand out this year? We'll see!
