Fighter, happy and very familiar, this is Clauvid Dály, the candidate for Miss Universe for the Dominican Republic. It bears the flag not only of her country, which she loves, but also of her curly hair and skin color, traits for which she was criticized when she won the crown in her beloved land. A tough situation that she took advantage of to become stronger and to further fuel her dreams. A few days ago the 18-year-old girl aspired to crown herself with the title of Miss Universe, an image that she visualized and wished with all her heart.
Along with her companions she lived one of the most beautiful experiences of her life and thus, happy and excited, she shared it exclusively with People en Español.
When you look back, what do you think of that moment when you were the victim of so much criticism?
That I am very satisfied with my work. The people who follow me and my family are very satisfied with the representation that I have made, the organization of the Dominican Republic as well and the people are seeing that their queen is a worthy representative. That is what fills me with satisfaction.
What is the best and worst thing about being a beauty queen?
The good thing is the platform. Since I was crowned Miss Dominican Republic, I have been listened to and that is a way of being able to do something and cause positive change. That for me is essential and the reason why I am here, to be heard. Then there is the negative, what I would tell you is getting up at four in the morning to comb your hair, grooming yourself, the sore feet from your heels and now (laughs).
Tell us about yourself, your family and your values
I grew up with my mom who was single and with my older brother, then the family grew because my mom married my stepfather who in turn had a son and they had another. The six of us have something in common, the values. Every day at 12 PM we sit down, we have very different lives but at that time we all get together to share the food. And Sundays are sacred, neither telephone nor television, only family and board games.
Did you imagine, did you ever dream of getting here?
Every day before I won the Miss Dominican Republic I went to bed with the crown on my head. When I won Miss Dominican Republic I see myself every day with the Miss Universe crown on. I am so close, I live to achieve that purpose and every day I go to bed with that imaginary crown.
Tell us what other things you do when you are not parading
I really like reading, I like origami, the art of folding paper, I like board games, in fact I have a very complete collection that I share with my friends and family. And also one or two days a week I give talks on the prevention of child marriage and to raise awareness about the high rate of teenage pregnancy. Both things happen through disinformation.
What is beauty for you?
Beauty comes from within, it takes time to prove that there is beauty within. There are many beautiful women in Miss Universe and among all of them she wins one, in my opinion, because she was different from the others, not only physically but also internally. For example, after you spend all that time with the Miss Universe girls, physical beauty, even if it is what impacts, in the end it goes to another plane and what comes to you is what is inside. The outside goes away but the inside persists.
What do you expect from Miss Univero?
Well, win (laughs), after all the work I've been through. But above all that my country and my family are proud to have me as a representative. I want to get up Monday morning and have no regrets. That is my goal.
