When he worked in one of the many stores in New York City, Manuel A. Mendez never imagined that his life would take such an interesting turn. Thanks to a gift from fate, the young man began working as an assistant on Beyoncé's I Am world tour, which later led her to work directly with the singer and later become the stylist for her daughter Blue Ivy. Today, Mendez savors the honeys of success not only as part of the artist's team, but also through engaging collaborations with designers, as well as other stylists. Your new adventure? A fun collaboration with Kidpik children's store.
We spoke with the Dominican designer and stylist to tell us a little more about this new project and to tell us a little about the world of fashion for children.
Manuel tell us about your collaboration with Kidpik, what is it about?
Kidpik has always caught my attention because they are not afraid to play with new trends and the quality [of their pieces] is excellent. I also love their subscription service because it makes life easier for moms who like their daughters to look beautiful and fashionable every day. They are giving children everywhere a stylist service and that is very cool.
I worked closely with the Kidpik team to choose the pieces for these boxes. They let me express my style and my personality. I really put my style in this collection and created looks that include my favorite trends of the moment. There is something for everyone. For active girls there is the Seven Sisters Box, which has the most modern sportswear. The little one likes prints. You can choose the Glow Bright Sis box. This one has looks that include layers and mix patterns in an unexpected way.
How do you describe your style as a stylist?
The way you put looks together is the way you stand out. I am not afraid to play with the textures, colors and patterns. Mixing two eye-catching pieces is something that catches your eye. So many things inspire me. Different cultures, artists, street looks. I would say that my style is very personalized.
What is the difference between working with children and with adults?
Working with children is much more fun. Children's world is full of brilliance and color, and it doesn't have to be that serious. I love prints. They are all so fun and reflect happiness. When these are combined in the perfect way, they look high and great. Small clothes somehow always look better.
Do you also work closely with other stylists?
Yes, in the projects I work on, I collaborate closely with the head stylist. Communication and working together are very important. This is the secret to creating iconic looks like the looks I've created for MTV VMA's, Wearable Art Gala and Family Feud videos.
What do you think of children's fashion right now?
Children like to look fashionable and comfortable at the same time. Personally I am fascinated with creating looks for my clients with the following trends: a touch of neon, color block looks, anima print, flights, patterned sneakers and mix of patterns. As for accessories, I love high stockings and bags with rhinestones and applications.
