The star stylist and Target collaborator Karla Birbragher gives us the best tips to make going back to school for your children as easy and fashionable as possible. If you don't even know where to start, don't miss the advice of the expert and mom of two children to get ready.
How can we facilitate the work of choosing the clothes that the children will wear to school every morning?
My best advice is to prepare the night before. Not only with the clothes, but [also with] the lunch box, the backpack, etc. That will save you at least 15-20 mins in the morning. My kids wear uniforms so it's a little easier to pick out their outfits at night. Cat & Jack uniforms are my favorites because they are shrink resistant, super comfortable and affordable. Children can personalize their looks with their backpacks, lunch boxes, and school supplies to highlight their individuality and personal style.
What are some essential pieces that every mom should buy for the school season?
One of my favorite trends for kids this school year are pieces with positive phrases. Metallic, litmus, and sequin are all the rage for girls, not only in clothing but also in school accessories like lunch boxes. You should also look for pieces that are inspired by technology, math, and science that promote learning, as well as pieces with a touch of paint that will encourage creativity. One of my favorite pieces in Target's Cat & Jack line is this white jacket with splashes of pastel paint throughout the jacket.
Are there colors or patterns that we should prefer or avoid?
For children definitely choose bright and cheerful colors. We are going to see many pastels and colors such as fuchsia, orange and yellow. And also, a lot of olive green, for girls and boys.
Sometimes children want to wear things that moms don't like because it doesn't suit their style. Should we guide our children to a style or let them express themselves in clothing as they please?
It is happening to me now with my son. I think you can have a balance. You have to let them express their own style and just guide them a bit. For example, if Lucas wants to wear a particular shirt and I don't like the pants he chose, together we try to reach an agreement with another option. Or if you want to put on some tennis shoes, I try to find something for you to match.
Can clothing influence how our children perform at school?
I think so, and a lot. If they don't feel comfortable and if they don't like their clothes, it can greatly affect their self-esteem. We have to help them to have self-confidence and ensure that they go to school happy and with their heads held high so that they do their best. That is why the positive messages being used in everything from accessories to shirts are more important now than ever.
Any other tips you want to share?
One of my favorite things I do with my children is to go to Target together and do all the shopping for school. I love to involve them by choosing their backpacks, lunch boxes, and school supplies. Not only are they special moments that they will always remember, but they are also motivating and exciting to start the new school year.
