Meet Ines Di Santo, The Designer Of The Most Successful Wedding Dresses In New York

They call her The dress whisperer because of her ability to know which is the best dress for each bride. And it is that Inés di Santo, the best-selling wedding dress designer at Bergdorf Goodman, has been making the dreams of many for more than 30 years come true with her dresses. We spoke with the designer of Italian-Argentine origin about the latest collection that she presented last Friday within the framework of New York Bridal Fashion Week.

What was your biggest inspiration for your latest collection?

For this collection I was inspired by New York City, its beautiful women and its different cultures. It is such a vibrant city that has so much glamor and so many different personalities.

What are the star materials of the collection?

A very soft fabric with gold that looks like charmeuse, lace, all imported from Europe. We use many pearls, embroidery, flowers, stones … It is a romantic collection and as it is inspired by different types of women, we have a style for each one.

What is your best advice for a future bride who is looking for a dress?

You always have to choose a dress that goes with your personality. Sometimes you do not know what to wear and, although it is clear that everything is beautiful in a girlfriend, that person who is so in love with that girlfriend would not want to see her completely different that day. I think that color is also important.

Are there elegant options beyond white?

They have to be soft colors because many people don't like white well. Latinos really like colors and they are important to me. A bride can choose an off-white, soft pink or light blue. Sometimes white white is not pretty, [for example] when one is blonde is a problem and on that special day one has to feel that she is the most beautiful woman on the planet or that she is going to the Oscars.

When did you know you wanted to pursue bridal fashion design?

I believe in love a lot and I decided to do this because I believe in love. For me many people can live with a lot or little money, but you can never live without love. My mother had a men's shirt factory so I grew up among materials and since I was little I made dresses for my dolls and, being a Catholic, I always took them to baptisms because it was important to me. With this job I feel like I am making a dream come true and it makes me feel very happy. Everyone remembers the wedding dress and many of us have dreamed of it since we were little.

They call it The dress whisperer, due to their ability to find out which dress the future bride will choose or which one is the most suitable for her personality. Where does this sixth sense come from?

When I create the dresses I am already thinking about a bride, I think I am already thinking about that personality. I think: "this dress is for someone very romantic", another dress is for someone more sexy but when the person tries on the dress, not only we are going to realize it, she alone is going to realize what looks good on her.

Any fashion references that have inspired you in your career as a designer?

Grace Kelly was my inspiration, liz Taylor and Jacqueline Keneddy too. I had the opportunity to study with a teacher who had worked for Christian Dior and that was always what I liked. Classic masters like Dior, Chanel and Valentino, the ones who dressed the most elegant women.

She likes the classic but succeeds among modern brides, what is the secret to being the best-selling designer at Bergdorf Goodman?

Thank God we have the opportunity to be in the most sought-after business, all women anywhere want to go there and very elegant people go. But for me it does not matter the budget of the bride, who has, whether it is 1,000 or 100,000, we must respect that special moment and do everything possible to make her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world and the happiest.
