The latest from Kat Von D is neither a long-lasting gloss nor a magic eyeliner, it is a whole team of makeup artists and influencers that she herself selected to accompany her and represent her brand around the world after following her work on social media.
The four have become close friends, tour the world, have fan clubs, and, like the girls from their favorite 90's girl band, each of them has a personality - in this case more of an area of different expertise-: “Leah is a master of complexion, Tara has a very pure style that comes from her background in the art world, Steffanie's gothic aesthetic is romantic and beautiful and Kelsey amazes me with her power to wear makeup to make it look like a painting, especially being so young. These women are true artists with great hearts,”says Von D of them in a press release.
They are the stars of the YouTube channel of the makeup artist turned beauty businesswoman where, in addition to teaching how they make those incredibly fantasy and creative looks that they usually wear themselves, they also give the most practical advice on how to design eyebrows, apply eyeliner or get the perfect red lips. We interviewed the four makeup artists in Los Angeles where they told us some of their favorite professional tips and what it is like to live in the most hooligan makeup group.
What was your first reaction when they learned that you had been selected to be part of this makeup team?
Group: panic, emotion, total panic.
Steffanie: People [said to us] "You just won the super bowl!" Yes, it is like winning the lottery, you know that your life will never be the same. We have worked hard in this industry for many years to achieve this. It's like a Disney ending.
Do they have the secret to the best selfie?
Group: Tara has the perfect arm!
Tara: First of all, do you see the length of my arm? the girls always ask me to take selfies. I love the camera on the back of the phone, it's much higher quality than the front, and using natural light is key. So you know, find a window because light is very important.
What to do before applying color to very dry and cut lips?
Steffanie: Spending time on the skin and lips before applying makeup is very important. After applying an intense lip moisturizer you can do a light exfoliation with a clean and dry mascara brush. Sometimes lip scrubs leave residue and that will be later when you apply lip color. The brush removes dead skin without leaving residue and the result is super soft and natural.
What is the best way to choose a makeup base?
Leah: At Sephora I was taught the three stripe technique. You choose the tone that you think is closest to your skin tone, then a lighter and a darker one. You blend them well and the color that disappears is yours. Never test it on the back of your hand or [like] some people who test it on the neckline. My mother is the sunniest person in the whole world and she always tries it on her chest area which is like 9 shades darker than her skin and it's like what are you doing?
Kat Von D discovered them on Instagram, do you think that social networks are a positive platform for makeup artists or that because of it there is a lot of lack of professionalism in the makeup world?
Leah: Everybody claims to be a “professional makeup artist” on social media and it's very easy to pretend, yes, but it's also great because [people] are being really creative, working hard and showing interesting images. We can all be what we want on social networks, I think it is a good thing.
Tara: networks are like a free portfolio. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for Instagram
Kelsey Anna: For people who live in more remote places it is very difficult to dedicate themselves professionally to makeup and this is a good platform to show your work and reach everyone.
What is your advice for someone who wants to dedicate themselves professionally to the world of makeup?
Leah: Do whatever! Practice on your mother, on your friends … free makeup.
Group: Yes, free makeup!
Steffanie: Yes, offer to work for free on photo shoots. Many people make exchanges with photographers, models, etc. in photo sessions in which everyone works for free, but it helps them to do a professional job among all that they can show later and [it serves] to perfect your art.
Kelsey Anna: I started by contacting photographers who seemed interesting to me and saying: "If you ever need a makeup artist … that's me!" Yes, collaborations are the best way to get into the industry.
