Kim Kardashian responded to the criticism that has rained down on her for a controversial photo where she appears darker than usual and for which she has been accused of being an "impostor".

In an interview with the New York Times and visiting New York for the launch of her new line of cosmetics -called KKW Beauty-, the 36-year-old reality star said that when they did the photo shoot she was "very tanned".

"Obviously, I never wanted to offend anyone," Kardashian said in the interview published Monday. “I drew on an incredible photographer and a team of people. I was very tan when the images were taken, and maybe the contrast was a little out of proportion. But I showed the photo to many people, to many in the [beauty world] business. No one pointed it out to me. No one mentioned it to me,”he said.

The photos of the controversy were originally published on June 15, and the avalanche of criticism was immediate. "I love Kim but that is a flat black face in the form of makeup," said a Twitter user indignantly. "She's not that dark, not even close," said another.

One by one, critics of the photo began accusing Kanye West's wife of "impostor" and of wanting to appropriate an identity that is not his own in order to sell more beauty products.
