This Saturday the fashion world was dressed in mourning when losing one of its greats. Franco-Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa died in Paris at the age of 77. A fairly serious fall a week ago left him in a coma without finally being able to overcome it.

Known for being unusual and different, Alaïa can be considered one of the most outstanding couturiers in recent decades. His free and independent style made him a favorite of first stars such as Madonna, Tina Turner or Lady Gaga herself, among many others.

For him, fashion was not measured by any specific calendar or fashion show. He chose their dates and only presented his original collections when he considered that they were ready. “It is not normal for a designer to be forced to make eight collections a year, even when he is a true genius. I don't know where the ideas come from. It is hard for me to have one that is interesting per collection,”he assured in an interview with the S Moda magazine of the Spanish newspaper El País, at the end of 2013.

Everyone went through his study without warning. Suddenly David Bowie, Johnny Depp or contemporary Kim Kardashian could arrive as if nothing were happening. Doors were always open and welcome. His list of friends was long although it is also worth mentioning the occasional opponent. For example, Anna Wintour, who blamed her Vogue pages for not taking her work into account.

His tenacity made him shine and become among the best. He was clear that he did not want to be a farmer like his parents, so he left for Paris where he trained with the great Muglers, Laroche and Dior, among others. The rest is in his designs and achievements, today embraced by the fashion world for which he lived body and soul.

With Azzedine, known for his smallness and short stature, it is clear that small can be big. Rest in peace.
