Everything is ready for the grand gala of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum (MET for its acronym in English), in New York City, where the most important stars of the entertainment world will parade dressed in the creations of the greatest designers Fashion.
This gala will kick off the majestic Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology exhibition dealing with the theme of handmade fashion versus machine-made fashion. Sponsored by Apple, the exhibition will be open to the public from May 5 and more than 100 costumes made by hand and with advanced technology are exposed.
"Fashion and technology are connected more than ever," said Thomas P. Campbell, MET director, at a news conference. “It is the ideal time to examine the roles that the hand-made and the machine-made have had in the creative process. This exhibition proposes a new point of view in which the hand-made and the machine-made, which are usually presented as opposites, are the protagonists alike”.
For his part, Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, added that the notion that separated haute couture from pret-a-porter- in which the first is based on handwork and the second is based on machine work- It is no longer as clear as it used to be. “Recently this distinction has been blurred since both disciplines have borrowed from the practices and techniques of the other. Manus x Machina challenges the conventions of this dichotomy and proposes a new paradigm for our new technological era”.
Designers with pieces on display include Christian Dior, Chanel, Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen), Gareth Pugh, Yves Saint Laurent, Iris Van Herpen, among others.
For their part, the hosts of the great party that will take place tonight in the facilities of said museum will be the editor of Vogue and founder of the gala, Anna Wintour, singer Taylor Swift, actor Idris Elba and Jony Ive, head of Apple design.
The exhibition will be open until August 14. Watch the video of the exhibition below.
