One of the great events of the fashion world is the gala dinner that every year the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, celebrates in the Big Apple for charitable purposes.

With the title Manus x machina: fashion in an age of technology, also known as the Met gala, it will be sponsored by Apple and will take place on May 2, 2016. The guests of honor of the edition will be the actor Idris Elba, the singer Taylor Swift, and Apple's chief designer, Jonathan Ive; and the designers honored will be Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada.

In addition to the dinner where great fashion designers and celebrities meet, the Met holds an exhibition, which will run from May 5 to August 14, which will explore the impact of new technologies on fashion and how designers are reconciling crafts and the work done by machines in haute couture. "Traditionally, the distinction between haute couture and ready-to-wear was based on artisan and machine-made, but that distinction is becoming blurred as both disciplines practice and technique the other," said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute.

For his part, the director and CEO of the Met, Thomas P. Campbell, added: “The artisanal and the made by machines are often presented as opposites. This exhibition proposes a new point of view in which the hand and the machine are equal and mutual protagonists”.

The 2015 gala and exhibition was dedicated to China, the 2014 gala to Charles James, and the 2013 gala to punk.
