The Colombian fashion expert and Project Runway (Lifetime) judge, Nina García, shared with us her style guidelines and key trends for this season.

You've just released Project Runway season fourteen, how do you feel about the success it has had so far?

It has been an amazing experience. I couldn't have imagined it. I think it was successful because the viewer can see the creation process, how the designer does something out of nothing, creativity. Yes, it is a reality show but it has opened up that mystery of what it is to be a designer, you see how difficult and hard it is to have to do something in minutes.

Let's talk about fashion. Give us five trendy items that we should wear this summer

The strongest trend is the seventies and the five things I would be thinking about to update your closet would be: wide-leg pants, low gladiator sandals or if you like to wear heels like me, platforms. They are very fashionable, easy to use and very comfortable. [You see] many fringes…. a suede bag with fringes from the seventies and in terms of skirts [can be] short, with gladiator sandals, or just below the knee, with platforms. Those would be my summer purchases.

What is the key to wear them well?

Do not dress up. If something does not fit you or is not your style, just invest in some accessories and it is the easiest way to transform your look. [Buy] a pair of shoes, a belt, a wallet instead of investing in the look from head to toe. That costs us a lot of money and the trends are temporary. [It is] about having your own style.

What would you advise Latinas to improve their style?

That you should always buy the size of one. Tight clothing doesn't necessarily look better. The other advice, since we like to be sexy and striking, is to keep in mind that if you are going to wear cleavage, you should not wear a short skirt, and if you are going to wear a short skirt, you should hide the cleavage. It is a matter of balance. Sometimes we also go overboard with makeup. Less is more, especially since Latinas are naturally so exotic and beautiful.

How do you feel about being a successful Latina in the US market?

I am very proud to be a Latina. I feel that my roots were what helped me to be where I am, it was my point of difference, I had a different eye. I always used my Latin roots as a force of pride, it gave me strength in the industry. I would like us to be more united, more proud of our culture because we contributed a lot to this country in many fields.
