Did you know that millions of people around the world await their Christmas gifts on January 6th? It is the day that the tradition of the Three Kings is celebrated.
This anniversary is very important in the Latin tradition and commemorates the journey of three magicians from the East who came to Bethlehem following his inspiration and guided by a star: they were looking for the King of Kings to worship him and hoping to find him in a palace, they ended up finding him in a miserable manger. They are only mentioned in the Gospel of Saint Matthew.
According to Herodotus, the magicians were originally a Meda tribe that became a priestly caste of the Persians. They practiced divination, medicine, and astrology. It was not until the 3rd century that it was established that these particular characters could be kings, since during the first three centuries after the birth of Jesus, it was only deduced that they were wealthy people by the way in which the iconographies and the gifts they carried, gold, incense and myrrh, which also have great symbolic meaning.
Also during that same century it was established that they were three wise men, because until then there were drawings with two, three and even four. Their names are found for the first time in a mosaic from the 6th century: Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar. Many centuries later, the three wise men were represented incarnating three origins, Melchior to the Europeans, Gaspar to the Asians and Baltasar to the Africans.
The night before January 6, the children and the not-so-young go to bed hoping to find their gifts the next morning, either by their shoe or under the Christmas tree. They also leave cookies or some food as a reward for the camels that carry their toys. Previously in December, they wrote a letter to the Three Kings where they asked for their wishes.
The next day, after opening their presents, the famous rosca or roscón de Reyes is eaten as a family for breakfast. This is when the countries that celebrate this tradition are considered to end the Christmas holidays.
According to tradition, the remains of Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar have been in the Cologne cathedral since the year 1,164 and were donated by the emperor Federico Barbarroja. Apparently it was the mother of the emperor Constantine who rescued her relics in the city of Saba, they were transferred to Istanbul and then to Milan until the twelfth century, when the German emperor found them in the looting of northern Italy.
