Jamie Lynn Spears, the sister of Britney Spears, witnessed the accident that has left her daughter Maddie in serious condition, but there was nothing she could do to rescue her, according to a police report.

The document obtained by People denies the rumors that the girl had been injured during a hunting trip and clarifies that it happened around 3:30 pm EST on Sunday at a property of the girl's family in Louisiana.

The statement signed by Tangipahoa Parish County Sheriff Daniel Edwards explains that the girl was driving a Polaris ATV off-road light vehicle when trying to avoid an obstacle she abruptly maneuvered and "the vehicle fell into a pond."

The police account also denies that the parents were not present and indicates that they witnessed what happened. "The vehicle and the girl were instantly submerged in the water in front of their eyes," the document underlines.

The family's reaction was immediate. “In seconds, the girl's mother, her stepfather, and other family members rushed to the pond and tried to rescue the girl, without success. The girl was trapped and secured with a seat belt and the ATV's protective mesh. Within two minutes, [company] Acadian ambulances arrived at the scene and helped free the girl from the cold waters.”

The girl remains in stable condition, but in critical condition, in a nearby hospital.

"This is an extremely tragic accident," the report concludes. "The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office asks them to constantly support the family in their prayers as they try to cope with this horrible incident. We ask that you respect your privacy during these times.”
