Drew Barrymore is introducing his second daughter, Frankie, for the first time on the cover of this week's People issue, in which he confesses that it has been difficult for him to combine caring for his two little girls with his career.
The actress, who gave birth to her second offspring with art consultant Will Kopelman on April 22, assures in an interview with the magazine that the recovery after this part has been faster than when she had her first daughter Olive, 20 months.
"I know I have two girls to take care of now and I have put the batteries to adjust to changes immediately," says Barrymore, for whom the biggest challenge has been how to divide their time. "They are awake and asleep at different times, or awake at the same time, and I have to do a little juggling."
Barrymore, 39, says her troubled childhood has influenced what she believes should be more important in her girls' lives.
Among other things, he admits that he wanted Olive to have a brother "because I would have liked to have one in my life" and he also wants "to be in a place when he says I'm going to be there. Create a stable home. I know that when my daughter wants to swing more strongly on the swing, or get into the pool and all that, she feels safe. The most important thing for me is that the children feel safe.”
Charlie's Angels co-star says Olive is thrilled to have a baby sister. "Olive loves Frankie and wants to be with her all the time. She wants to feed her. It is superinvolved, for now. Things will surely come and go, "she adds.
Barrymore is currently in the midst of promoting his new comedy with Adam Sandler, Blended, which opens this Friday. Regarding her career, the actress admits that she was not sure if she wanted to act after the birth of Olive.
“I honestly didn't think I could go back to acting. I didn't want to be away from my daughters. It was simply not a priority, she admits. “With Adam I feel safe because he creates an environment in which the children can come and live together. It was a very big lesson for me.”
The actress, however, knew that the demands of her job would be knocking on her door shortly after giving birth. Barrymore says Sandler "kept her present and in tune" during filming.
Having a new project helped her take care of her physique after giving birth, but on a mental level she has not yet recovered. "When I enter a room to look for something, I have already forgotten what was coming," says the actress as an example of her current state.
