For Rodrigo Guirao, being part of the new version of Rubí that Univision broadcasts with great success at 10 pm Eastern time, has a very special meaning on a personal level. His grandmother, who passed away several years ago, was very fanatic of the work that Sebastián Rulli did in his day in the soap opera that Bárbara Mori starred, curiously the same character that he now has the opportunity to interpret in the fiction that Camila Sodi heads.
In an exclusive interview with People en Español, the 40-year-old interpreter tells us all the details of his participation in this story and reveals, among other things, whether he has had to meet many women like Rubí in real life and how it was the encounter he had months ago with Rulli.
What was the first thing that came to your mind when they confirmed that you would be part of the new version of Rubí?
Thinking about my grandmother and my mother who had been very big fans of Rubí from 2004.
Curiously, it was another Argentine, Sebastián Rulli, who gave life to Héctor in the previous version, did you get to see her?
Clear. Rulli's version was broadcast in Argentina in 2005 and did really well, it was a super success. As I said before, my grandmother and my mother always saw it and it so happens that when my first novel was released in Argentina, we occupied Rubí's schedule, the first week Rubí went half an hour and the other half my first novel, then I always saw with my grandmother the end of Rubí and the beginning of mine. I had those memories.
We know that you had the opportunity to speak with Sebastián Rulli, did he give you any advice?
Yes, I had the opportunity to meet him, to talk to him, to send him the greetings of my mother who loves his work first and then to talk a little about how Rubí was and how he took him by surprise. And one of the tips he gave me was that this character Hector is not a villain, but rather he was committing villainy. He had interpreted it that way, it seemed very good to me and luckily it was a little in sync with what I was deciding for this Héctor.

Comparisons between one version and the other are inevitable, do they give you respect or fear?
No, the public is good to think. There will be a part of the public that saw the previous Ruby and another that did not and those who saw it will say 'such a thing was different'. But comparisons are impossible with almost 20 years apart. It is another story, another very different script, another format … There are 26 chapters and different things happen and surprises and that for me is good that it is not exactly the same as the old version, then they will be surprised. Those who saw Rubí before will be surprised with the story and those who will see it for the first time as well.
Your character is duped by the charms of Rubí and ends up paying the consequences, have you had to meet any Rubí in real life?
That way, yes, but I was not injured or damaged by any of them.
What does it mean to you to be part of such an important and successful story?
For me it is an honor. It seems to me one of the great stories of the novels and my character seems to me one of the best characters, probably even seems to me the best character in the series, so it is an honor, it is a thank you for the trust and also for this that I told you from my mother and grandmother. Obviously my grandmother doesn't live today and having ended up playing her favorite character from her favorite soap opera has a lot of meaning.

How about chemistry with Camila Sodi?
With Cami the chemistry was very nice. She is a very smart and funny woman on set. But Héctor is really very jealous and that conflict had to be generated, so for many weeks we only recorded fight scenes that at one point I say 'Cami do you realize that two or three weeks ago we were screaming every day? and are you hiding from me? ' (laughs) Like sometimes the energy of the characters sticks a bit more to you in the time you are on stage than the one you are off stage.

What was the biggest challenge for you when it came to bringing Hector to life?
For me, the greatest was that his humanity was seen, that I myself felt his humanity and could justify it as an actor, understand why he does what he does, why he suffers from what he suffers, why he throws his entire career and all to the ground. his life and why he loses even the goal of his own life for this woman. That was the most difficult thing to understand: his vulnerability and why he did all that.
