Everything changes for a retired boxer who leads a modest life dedicated to raising his son when his ex-wife, now lover of his main rival in the ring, returns to fight for custody of the boy. This is the starting point of Ringo, a soap opera that lands today in Univision prime time with José Ron as the protagonist. “It is a 100 percent family novel. It is a melodrama, but it also has its comedy touches,”the renowned Mexican actor excitedly tells hours after its premiere in an exclusive interview with People en Español.
José Ron has nothing to do with that gallant that I play in the novels. I consider myself a person like any other, with his feelings, sensitive, with virtues, with defects …
What attracted you most about the project?
What attracted me most was undoubtedly the character. In fact, when Lucero Suárez [the producer] told me and told me about this story, I was traveling and I was very excited by the idea of playing a boxer. And well the story is beautiful.
How would you present the soap opera to us?
I would describe it as a novel of many values for the message it has, for the part of the father who dedicates himself to giving the best to his son, the sacrifices [he has to do]. It is a novel that people can identify with. I think they are going to have fun because it has practically everything.
How challenging was it for you to get into the skin of a professional boxer?
It was a project that demanded a lot of me physically. It was very demanding, but it was a great challenge in my career. I would not change it for anything. It was 6 months difficult to carry out a meal plan, to combine training with recording times, so it did demand a lot physically and emotionally, but in the end the result was very good. I am very satisfied and grateful for the opportunity and I hope that the public receives it with much affection.
Ringo.
What does José Ron de Ringo have?
I believe that the part of values, of the family, also of not letting yourself be overcome by anything or anyone. Life can hit us many times, but the important thing, as for Ringo, is to get up, no matter how hard life can hit you, the most important thing is always to keep going, learn from what is happening to you and continue.
I am a very sensitive, dedicated and passionate person. I take a lot of care of mine
How about chemistry with Mariana Torres?
Chemistry very well. We had never worked together and I had a great time with her. We work very well. She is also super talented, dedicated to the project, always ready to propose the best for the story, for the characters.
José Ron and Mariana Torres.
You are a dad in fiction, how difficult is it to work with a child on set?
It is amazing to work with a child. I think we have so much to learn and with Pato de la Garza, who is the actor who played my son, the chemistry was incredible. Also the super-intelligent, super-sensitive and super-delivered child. It is wonderful.
José Ron and his son in Ringo.
Do you see yourself as a dad in the future?
Yes, of course. In due time, but yes.
In recent years you have not stopped starring in soap operas, how handsome do you consider yourself to be in real life?
[I am] grateful because I do what I like and because I have a job. I always try to be delivered and put my 100 in each project. [But] José Ron has nothing to do with that heartthrob he played in the novels. I consider myself a person like any other, with their feelings, with virtues, with defects, that is, I consider myself a normal person and I do not go through life thinking about whether I am a lover or not a lover.
You have become one of the most beloved faces on the small screen, what makes you keep your feet on the ground?
I believe that I value a lot for what I have had to go through and I am here also based on a lot of effort and sacrifice. I love what I do together with the music, so I am grateful that the public also receives me with such affection when I am in a project and grateful to the people who trust my work. For me the important pillars are my family, God, not forgetting where we come from … For me that is the key, I always have it stuck in my being, it is like my essence and I do not see why change by dedicating myself to this career.
José Ron.
What would be your most unknown facet?
I am a very sensitive, dedicated and passionate person. I take a lot of care of mine. I believe that as that part of José Ron of being human very few know it. Also the part of passion for life, of positive thinking, of always going forward. I am super affectionate with children, I am very playful, playful, intense.
