Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are in Miami and prepping for their Super Bowl performance this Sunday. The beloved divas had some fun in a press conference, where they caught some footballs and dished about their halftime show. “It's a lot of energy, it's very entertaining. There are heartfelt moments. It's packed with a lot of awesome moments,”J. Lo said, still not giving away any details. "I want everybody to be surprised and I don't want to give away too much."
Shakira added about their collaboration: “Your show, my show, they are very different but very complementary. They complement each other. We have been working so hard these past weeks so everybody can enjoy this Sunday a great show.”
The Nuyorican singer and actress, 50, said she's proud to be part of this historic performance. “This Super Bowl, the two teams that are playing, the Chiefs and the 49ers, are run by women, and then you have two women heading the halftime show - that statement alone for me is empowering,” said Lopez. “When I think of my daughter, when I think of all the little girls in the world, to be able to see that - two Latinas doing this at this time in this country - it's just very empowering for us and I'm very proud to be able to help set and push forward that message.”
“When I was living in Barranquilla, my hometown as a little girl, no one would have thought I would be performing at the Super Bowl one day. This is a palpable example of how anything is possible,”Shakira, 42, said. “Latinos are going through a difficult time in the US right now and it's very important for us to convey a message of unity and to show what a relevant force the Latin community is in this country, how much we have to offer.”
The singers also talked about how they each reacted to the news of Kobe Bryant's death. “Gerard [Piqué], my partner, called me with the sad news. He was very affected because he knew Kobe and I knew him, too; he went to one of my shows. I can't imagine the pain that his family must be going through right now. Life is so fragile and that's why we have to try to live every moment as intensely as we can. We will all be remembering Kobe on Sunday and we will be celebrating life and diversity in this country. I'm sure he would be very proud to see the message that we are going to be trying to convey on stage that day,”Shakira said. “It's a very important moment for our community, for the Latino community in this country. The Super Bowl is a very American event - it's as American as it can get - and I think it's going to be very nice to see that it's also going to be a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity, and that's what we will be celebrating on Sunday.”
J. Lo said she was rehearsing for the Super Bowl show when her fiancé, Alex Rodriguez, who was a close friend of Kobe Bryant, came to her with tears in his eyes and shared the news of the tragic loss of the NBA star. “I think about Vanessa as a mom, and losing her best friend and partner and losing her child, and I think how awful that must be for her right now. I've been praying that God guides her through every moment because she has three more babies to take care of,”Lopez reflected. “What we are trying to do is to spread love and kindness and bring everybody together. I think in this week this happening has a sound around the world of like, 'We have to love each other, we have to be together and we have to support each other and we can't be so at odds all the time.' That's part of our mission and our message, too.”
