Cory Booker is no longer running for president of the United States. The New Jersey senator made the announcement on Monday, sharing an emotional message on social media and thanking his supporters. “It's with a full heart that I share this news - I've made the hard decision to suspend my campaign for president,” he wrote on Instagram. “I've said throughout this race that this election is not just a referendum on Donald Trump. It's a referendum on who we are and who we must be to each other. And over the past year, I've seen the very best of who we can be. To my team, supporters, and everyone who gave me a shot - thank you. I am so proud of what we built, and I feel nothing but faith in what we can accomplish together.”
NBC News reported that Booker had a staff call at his campaign headquarters in Newark before sharing the announcement with the rest of the world. “It was a difficult decision to make, but I got in this race to win, and I've always said I wouldn't continue if there was no longer a path to victory,” I've told supporters. “Our campaign has reached the point where we need more money to scale up and continue building a campaign that can win - money we don't have, and money that is harder to raise because I won't be on the next debate stage and because the urgent business of impeachment will rightly be keeping me in Washington.”
Last year, Booker spoke to People CHICA about the support of his girlfriend, actress Rosario Dawson, during his campaign. "She just came back from a trip to Iowa with me, and people light up when they see her," he said. “Having her with me on the campaign trail - she is a busy, working mom so that doesn't happen often - but when she's on, she is just an incredible asset, my significant other. Most people have significant others in this race, but I feel that I have somebody that is in so many ways my peer, in so many ways someone that I aspire to be like.”
He also discussed what his priorities would be if he got to sit in the Oval Office: ending gun violence, reforming health care, and dealing with the “powerful threats of climate change.” This month, Democratic candidates Julián Castro and Marianne Williamson also dropped out of the presidential race. “The primaries might be tightly contested among the top contenders, and I don't want to get in the way of a progressive candidate winning any of them. As of today, therefore, I'm suspending my campaign,”Williamson said last week. These are not times to despair; they are simply times to rise up. Things are changing swiftly and dramatically in this country, and I have faith that something is awakening among us,”she added. “A politics of conscience is still yet possible. And yes… love will prevail.”
